Chapter 83: Blackout
By Evelyn Hart · 130 words
Adrian once believed control could prevent loss. Lately, control seemed to be the surest way to cause it.
A coordinated blackout disables phones and alarms. Adrian and Claire race through gridlocked streets toward Naomi's building.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.
Naomi's apartment is empty except for Lucy's paper crown and a message ordering Claire to come alone.
"No police. No Adrian. Bring Margaret."
Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.
Claire secretly activates the emergency beacon Adrian sewed into Lucy's backpack after the museum incident.
