The Divorce She Planned in Silence

Chapter 61: First Date

By Evelyn Hart · 144 words

Claire had learned that silence was never empty. It held every sentence people were afraid to say.

Adrian takes Claire to the small diner where they had coffee, not the expensive restaurant she expects. They agree to ask questions they should have asked years ago.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. They had become unusually honest since the divorce began. Honesty did not make the choices easier, but it stopped them from pretending that ease was the same thing as peace.

Claire learns he has begun therapy and is considering teaching ethical finance; Adrian learns she wants Bellweather to include affordable artist housing.

"What are you afraid will happen if this works?"

Neither of them called it forgiveness. Forgiveness was too large for one night and too fragile to demand.

Claire answers: that I will disappear again.
