Chapter 55: The Answer Before Court

Adrian once believed control could prevent loss. Lately, control seemed to be the surest way to cause it.

Claire says yes to one date, with no expectation and no secrecy. She also insists they complete the divorce without romantic bargaining.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. Nothing between them was simple now. Attraction lived beside anger; tenderness stood beside evidence. Every kind act raised the same dangerous question: was this change, or merely fear wearing a better suit?

Adrian signs the remaining settlement papers and returns every claim to control.

"I am not signing because I stopped loving you. I am signing because love without freedom ruined us."
