The Divorce She Planned in Silence

Chapter 13: The Custody Petition

By Evelyn Hart · 138 words

Adrian once believed control could prevent loss. Lately, control seemed to be the surest way to cause it.

Victor anonymously supplies family court with claims that Claire's dangerous work and unstable housing endanger Lucy. Eleanor's signature appears on a supporting affidavit.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.

Adrian arrives at court with his own sworn statement contradicting his mother and accepting equal blame for every lapse.

"If this court wants the absent parent, I am standing right here."

Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.

The judge orders a temporary evaluation of both homes.
