The city kept moving, indifferent to the private disaster gathering inside one family.

A thunderstorm traps Adrian at the brownstone during his first overnight visit. Lucy panics when the power fails, and Claire watches him abandon three business calls to build the reading cave by flashlight.

Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. For years Claire had translated Adrian's absence into excuses. Now she watched actions instead, and Adrian understood that no speech could shorten the distance he had made.
