Chapter 8: Helena at the Door
By Evelyn Hart · 143 words
The trouble began with something small enough to ignore and dangerous enough to matter.
Helena arrives at Whitmore Studio with proof that her father, Victor Cross, wants Claire off Bellweather because the hotel hides records tied to an illegal land deal.
Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.
Claire distrusts her, but Helena produces the duplicate-card order and warns that Victor will use Lucy if business pressure fails.
"I wanted Adrian once. I do not want the man he became while winning my father's approval."
Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.
Someone has already requested Lucy's private school schedule.
