Chapter 43: Bellweather Burns

The trouble began with something small enough to ignore and dangerous enough to matter.

Claire enters the burning hotel after learning a night guard is trapped. Adrian follows with firefighters while Owen coordinates structural plans outside.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.

They rescue the guard, but a collapsing stair separates Claire from the exit.

"Adrian, take the ledger and go."

Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.

He throws the ledger away and runs back into the smoke.
