The Divorce She Planned in Silence

Chapter 40: After the Sirens

By Evelyn Hart · 133 words

Claire had learned that silence was never empty. It held every sentence people were afraid to say.

At the hospital, Claire trembles only after Lucy is safe in her arms. Adrian sits outside the curtain rather than intruding.

Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. Nothing between them was simple now. Attraction lived beside anger; tenderness stood beside evidence. Every kind act raised the same dangerous question: was this change, or merely fear wearing a better suit?

Claire asks him in, rests her forehead against his, and allows comfort without redefining their relationship.

"Stay until I fall asleep. Nothing more."

The moment did not repair what came before. It did, however, alter what might come after.

He wakes to find her fingers still closed around his sleeve.
