Chapter 17: The Ring on the Step

There were decisions that announced themselves and decisions that waited until every escape had closed.

The note says Adrian will not wear the ring as a claim while she is asking for freedom, but he will keep his vows in his conduct until the court ends them.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. Lucy remained the line neither of them would cross. Whatever happened between the adults, their daughter would not be asked to purchase harmony with her own safety.

Claire returns the ring in person, explaining that grand gestures frighten her because they often demand a response.

"Then no gesture. Coffee tomorrow, if you want it. Ten minutes. No promises."

Claire felt the old instinct to protect everyone from discomfort. This time she let the truth remain in the room.

She says yes, then discovers Bellweather's fire system has been deliberately disabled.
