Chapter 19: The First Coffee
By Evelyn Hart · 138 words
Claire had learned that silence was never empty. It held every sentence people were afraid to say.
Claire meets Adrian for their promised ten-minute coffee in a crowded diner where no one knows them. He asks about her work and listens without checking his phone.
Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. For years Claire had translated Adrian's absence into excuses. Now she watched actions instead, and Adrian understood that no speech could shorten the distance he had made.
Ten minutes becomes an hour until Owen calls from the hospital, exposing Adrian's jealousy and Claire's immediate defensiveness.
"I am allowed friends you did not choose."
Desire moved between them like weather: undeniable, changeable, and no longer mistaken for a promise.
Adrian agrees, but spots Victor's security chief watching from across the street.
