Nobody noticed the light in the upstairs window except the person it was meant for.
Sora stood outside the old house, holding the one thing that should not have been there. It felt heavier than it looked, warmed by a hand that had vanished moments before.
This was not how the day had been planned. There should have been coffee, a short walk, and the comfortable work of pretending nothing had changed.
On the table lay a small brass key and a note with only three words: Begin where it ends.
The sensible choice was to leave. Sora knew this with the calm certainty reserved for advice we have no intention of following.
A door opened somewhere beyond sight. Dust lifted through a bar of light, each bright speck turning slowly like a distant star.
"Hello?" The word travelled farther than it should have.
No one answered, but the object in Sora’s hand gave a small, unmistakable click.
Later, it would be easy to call that sound the beginning. In the moment, it sounded like a promise being kept.
Whatever happened next, going back was no longer possible.
